St. Matthew's has been my family’s church since before I was born.  Every sacrament I have made has been here.  I still remember my first reconciliation, first Holy Communion, and confirmation.  When I moved back home after 10 years, I was able to see how involved my mom is with our church community and it inspired me to do the same.  I felt the invitation God was giving me.

I, however, did not know where He was calling me.  My mom suggested I speak to Jean Stillman about how and where I could volunteer.  Jean in turn told me about the school and the catechism program.  I thought about it and realized how much I loved my catechism teachers when I was a child.  I will not forget talking to Jane Fuller about wanting to help as an aide to any teacher.

Last year was my first year as an aide. And the light went off, I love this!  I loved helping and teaching the kids so much I told Jane, “Sign me up, I want to teach next year!”  There is something about teaching children about how much Jesus loves them, helping them learn the Lord’s Prayer, and holding hands with them as they pray.  Every time I have felt the Holy Spirit there with us.  It is a blessing to get to work with not only the children but the other catechists as well.

I thank God for guiding me to become a catechist and for Jane.  I’m also looking forward to becoming more involved with our community, as I will begin taking formation classes this fall and have volunteered to help with a posada project.

Las Posadas is a nine-day celebration with origins in Spain, now celebrated chiefly in Mexico, Guatemala and parts of the Southwestern United States,[1][2] beginning December 16 and ending December 24, on evenings (about 8 or 10 PM).
