Text Box: When and where Jesus was born is not critical to our belief. But in this year of favor from the Lord we need not look any farther than our church two thousand years young and guided by God’s love imparted to the faithful who have come before us, our fellow parishioners who pray with us in the pews, the saints who intercede for us as from beyond the grave and the Holy Father, Cardinals, Bishops throughout the world including the United States Conference of Bishops and Priests wherever they are called including our very own Father David who all lead our church here on earth in opposition to those who champion a culture of sin resulting in the death of innocence.
While the United States teeters on the brink of insolvency our difficult decisions postponed by the false pride of many of our elected to politicize every decision in a vacuum of leadership we can rest assured that no matter what the source of our personal anxiety-due to financial stressors, health concerns or even the death of a loved one we remain always in meditative and contemplative prayer that this tiny child brought something much more wonderful: God’s peace, eternal life, and end to sin and death.
The Holy Father is offering a Plenary Indulgence for each of us entering into this Year of Faith. In Baptism not only is the guilt of sin remitted, but also the penalties attached to sin. In the Sacrament of Penance the guilt of the sin is removed, and with it the eternal punishment due to mortal sin; but there still remains the temporal punishment required by Divine justice, and this requirement must be fulfilled either in the present life or in the world to come, i.e. in Purgatory. An indulgence offers the penitent sinner the means of discharging this debt during his or her life on earth. [6]
May we reflect on this Year of Faith as an invitation for our own spiritual renewal and gift from Our Holy Father!
As proclaimed by the character Tiny Tim in Charles Dickens Christmas Story: “May God Bless us each and every one.”
Merry Christmas!
